Neela
Neela is an artist and a leader. Her passion for music and drive to pursue it from a young age has become core to who she is. Meet Neela. This is her story.
P: Please introduce yourself!
N: I love singing and making music. I admire my persistence to stay true to myself.
P: Tell us a story. Have you had an experience that’s defined you or made you stronger?
N: Growing up, I didn't see a lot of south Asian representation in the music industry. I'm also one of the first artists in my family. I felt like I didn't belong or I had this impossible dream. But now it pushes me to keep going, not just for myself but future generations and young girls like me to know that they do belong.
P: What is one piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
N: Keep letting yourself make mistakes, and take risks. Rejection, failure, and hard times will only bring you closer to your true purpose.
P: Who is one woman that inspires you? What would you say to her if she were here now?
N: I really admire MIA. She was the first brown artist I knew that looked like me. She uses her platform to bring change and is unapologetically herself, courageously speaking truth to power. I am forever grateful for all the women, including my mom and the matriarch in my family, who made it possible for girls like me to dream bigger.
