Sierra

To me, being a woman is all about compassion, strength and fluidity. It’s about nurturing yourself so that you can give whole-heartedly to those around you. It’s about connecting to your body, and finding strength and peace with yourself above everything else.
— Sierra Vandervort

Growing up, Sierra’s childhood was consumed by negativity. She and her mum had to rely on one another for salvation, and also escape. These experiences forced Sierra to grow up remarkably fast, and to develop an independence that often inhibited her from being able to open up. Now as an adult, Sierra is determined to live positively. She navigates her days with compassion and mindfulness, and through her business The Local Mystic, Sierra works to empower and support other women to do the same. She does this through her role as a yoga and meditation instructor - guiding women as they embark on their own selfcare journey. Sierra is a free spirit who is passionate about adventure. She lives with gratitude - for herself and also for the women around her. Meet Sierra. This is her story.

P: Please introduce yourself!

S: I'm Sierra - I'm a yoga & meditation teacher, writer, and community builder. Currently, I'm living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States near coastal Oregon - but I'm usually traveling in a converted campervan with my partner and our dog Sweet Dee. I'm a Scorpio sun, Aquarius moon, and Leo Rising. I love music, puppies, writing in coffee shops, and rainy days. Through my brand The Local Mystic, I teach women how to find joy & inspiration through self-care rituals and a spiritual community. I love dancing, connecting with others, and creating the most magical life that I can.

P: Describe or define yourself in your own words.

S: I'm a do-er. I love to create, and I love having big dreams that I can chase. I'm a little emotional at times, but I have a big heart. I'm smart and intuitive, and I think that makes me come off as a bit quiet - but I actually identify as a big extrovert!

P: What is your favorite thing about yourself?

S: I love my passion & my drive. When there's something that I want to accomplish, I don't let anything stand in my way. I was raised by a very strong single mother, and I think I have a lot of her strength and intention.

P: Tell us a story. Have you had an experience that’s defined you or made you stronger?

S: When I was young, I was raised around a lot of negativity: drugs, abuse, greed, and depression. As I was growing up, my mom and I had to work together to get ourselves out of those situations and take care of ourselves. I think that was a pivotal point for me and the development of my independence. As I'm getting older, I now realize this is both a strength and a weakness. I'm so reliant on my independence, that I oftentimes have trouble fully opening up to those around me. I think it's a constant practice to keep uncovering ways that we can grow and become more open-hearted people.

P: What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

S: You don't always need to be right.

P: What does being a woman mean to you?

S: To me, being a woman is all about compassion, strength and fluidity. It's about nurturing yourself so that you can give whole-heartedly to those around you. It's about connecting to your body, and finding strength and peace with yourself above everything else.

P: Who is one woman that inspires you? What would you say to her if she were here now?

S: My mother. I would tell her that I'm so grateful for everything she's done for me, and that I wouldn't be the woman I am today without her. I would tell her that she's amazing just as she is, and that she doesn't need to change for anyone or anything.
