K: Please introduce yourself!
S: My name in Scarlett Delgado, residing in Oakville Ontario. I am currently 2X Silver Glove Champion and represent Ontario for 54 kg division in Olympic amateur boxing.
K: Describe yourself in your own words
S: I am a high performance athlete, my current focus in boxing, however I have a history in competing in freestyle wrestling and I will be branching into professional wrestling in the near future. I am dedicated to always being a better version of myself. I’m very resilient and work effectively under high pressure. In sports I’ve always had the, “get on my level or get out of my way” approach, and I always set the bar higher because I have a drive to push myself to achieve more. Despite the very intense outlook I have in my athletic career, outside of training I’m a big love bug to my family and close friends. I have a very soft heart and want the very best for those I keep close around me.
K: Tell us a story. Have you had an experience that has defined you or made you stronger?
S: It’s hard to say just one story that has defined me or made me stronger because there’s many moments throughout the years that I’ve built from. One story though, when I was 15 years old and competing for gold at the Ontario championships in freestyle wrestling, my opponent took a shot at my legs and I defended by sprawling. Unfortunately the mat we were wrestling on was damaged and my foot went through the hole of the mat, causing a full dislocation of my hip with only 8 seconds left of the match. I remember hearing everyone gasp and stop moving because they were initially shocked and I wasn’t screaming so they didn’t know what to do. It was the longest eight seconds of my life, but I wanted to win so bad and I wasn’t going to let anything stop that, so I held on and kept my mouth shut for the entire duration until I won the match. This incident really made me see what I was willing to do to obtain my goals and how resilient I am. It wasn’t the best circumstances to learn that - but I always had faith in myself from that point on that nothing in this world could break me.
K: What is one piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
S: I would tell my younger self that everything comes down to the power of choice. Pain and suffering is temporary, so even choosing a path that doesn’t feel good in the moment - do it for your long term well being. The longer you hold on to negativity or anything that doesn’t serve your higher purpose, the more time you’re wasting from achieving your goals.
K: What does being a woman mean to you?
S: Being a woman to me is the most beautiful gift. As a woman, we are a powerful force filled with passion, creativity and endless knowledge from our mothers before us. We are the only force on earth powerful enough to navigate unborn spirits into this planet. This is the greatest gift of all.
K: Who is one woman that inspires you? What would you say to her if she were here now?
S: As cliche as others may perceive it, Cleopatra inspires me and always has since I was a child. Her power and strength during an era when women were considered property or lower status than live stock. People have this misconception that she seduced her way to the throne, but she was incredibly intelligent. People have transformed her image into this “seductive sex icon” through the media and Hollywood, which is far from the truth, almost as if no one can believe a woman during that time could posses that power, so she must have “slept her way through.” In reality she was the most powerful woman, actually person, of her time with her worth equal to $400 billion dollars in today’s day. She was more than just a pretty face.
