Isabella
Isabella is a passionate advocate for women’s rights who navigates life with an open heart. She radiates kindness - but awarding that kindness to herself hasn’t always been easy. When she was younger, she was diagnosed with severe eczema. This diagnosis began to skew her perception - it became all she could see. Now she is working to realise her own power and beauty and not let her diagnosis define her. She is a strong role model for girls and women everywhere, whether she is demonstrating in the streets for reproductive rights or learning to embrace herself as she is. Meet Isabella. This is her story.
P: Please introduce yourself!
I: My name is Isabella Covarrubias, my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a newly transferred college student at the University of Texas in San Antonio studying Kinesiology, I am a part of the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi (Upsilon Lambda) and am involved in a few clubs at UTSA!
P: Describe or define yourself in your own words.
I: I was diagnosed with severe eczema when I was a child and for a very long time that was the only thing I believed defined me.
Describing myself would be difficult because every day I learn a little more about myself. I am a daughter and a sister first, but I try to be an inspiration and motivation to others to be open and loving, not only other people but also themselves.
P: What is your favourite thing about yourself?
I: My favorite thing about myself would be that it takes a lot to bring me down and I have a very determined mindset.
P: What is one piece of advice you’d give your younger self?
I: One piece of advice that I would give my younger self would be to remember that the days might be long but the weeks go by fast and to not overthink the little things like what outfit will cover most of my body to hide my eczema. Also, I would want my younger self to know that I am loved for a thousand more reasons than my skin.
P: What does being a woman mean to you?
I: Being a woman means more than just being able to carry a child. Especially during a time where it seems, we don’t have much control over our own bodies.
P: Who is one woman that inspires you? What would you say to her if she were here now?
I: One woman that has inspired me would be my friend Ashley. She, unfortunately, passed away at such a young age. It’s weird...I can sometimes still feel her hands holding mine. She was such a light and always held herself with so much hope. She made me strong, she always would remind me that each day is a gift and to always give it 110%. If she were here today, I would cherish every millisecond I would have with her. We’d watch movies all night and eat until we were sick. As most people know, when you lose someone important in your life at such a sudden moment you will always feel a little lost. But through that, you can learn to love a little deeper. We must all care a little more and love a little deeper.
