Mariam

Life won’t apologize for anything, so have faith and surely your sun will rise one day where you achieve your goals; it is only a matter of time.
— Mariam Chokor

Mariam is a motivated academic who is in pursuit of a law degree from the Lebanese University; she is particularly passionate about the realm of human rights. Her lust for learning has allowed her to expand her perspectives, seeking to understand other cultures and customs. Beyond her academic pursuits, she also values personal development in all areas of her life, and continually pushes herself to grow and improve. This drive to be better is fueled by her optimistic outlook and willingness to fail in order to become the best version of herself. Meet Mariam. This is her story,

K: Please introduce yourself!

M: My name is Mariam Chokor and I am a 22-year-old Lebanese woman. I strive daily to develop myself and improve myself. I study law at the Lebanese University and I am currently completing a master’s degree, so I am interested in the field of human rights, especially the right to education.

K: Describe yourself in your own words

M: I am a simple young woman who loves education and strives to always be positive and down to earth, living life as it is. I am interested in improving my knowledge and always learning from my mistakes, and I have a great social awareness and adapt quickly. I love people and learning about different cultures and societies.

K: What is your favorite thing about yourself?

M: I like and don't like things about myself, but what I really like is that I get sad when I fail, but I'm optimistic from the inside. I feel others as I understand them at a strange speed and do not make mistakes twice as I try to create equality in all areas of my life.

K: Tell us a story. Have you had an experience that’s defined you or made you stronger?

M: I have many experiences that made me a stronger person, starting from my childhood where I was weak and shy, but with silence I learned when to speak. Those days lost me many special people whom I loved as a childhood friend that left me and my friends. But it created strength for continuity, so I changed my way of thinking about myself, and I rose, a strong and inspiring person who never gives in to circumstances.

K: What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

M: Life won’t apologize for anything, so have faith and surely your sun will rise one day where you achieve your goals; it is only a matter of time.

K: What does being a woman mean to you?

M: Being a woman is a very special and great thing because the world’s view of women is different, as long as the evaluation is according to beauty and external appearance, but the woman is much more important, as she is the mother, sister, nanny, worker, and wife and achiever, she is an integrated group of greatness, and this is unique.

K: Who is one woman that inspires you? What would you say to her if she were here now?

M: The woman who inspires me is the most beautiful mother: my mother.

I am nothing without my mother, and without the beauty of her morals, her heart, the greatness of her thinking, and the wonderful qualities she possesses.

I always look at her and I wish I could be like her in everything.

I would like to tell her that my heart loves you and that I hope to be a source of happiness and pride for you throughout this life.

And as Mahmoud Darwish once said, “I adore my life, because if I die, I will be ashamed of my mother’s tears.”
